The holiday season is about more than giving gifts. It’s also about giving back, spreading the holiday spirit far and wide. Make this season a golden one in the Treasure Valley by involving yourself in several community initiatives.
Support Small Businesses
When doing your Christmas shopping this year, buy local. Small Business Saturday is a great place to start as many Boise establishments ranging from boutique retail stores to donut shops showcase their products and services. Taking place on Thanksgiving Saturday (November 24), show your appreciation of their hard work by visiting, purchasing items, or even offering your help for the day.
Volunteer at a Local Organization
Treasure Valley organizations rely on your help in order to ensure a merry and safe Yuletide for one and all. You can lend your time to the American Red Cross of Greater Idaho's Disaster Action Team to respond to various emergencies during the season.
The Boise Bicycle Project could also use your help if you're good with your hands so that they fix and gift bikes to kids.
You can make people feel at home away from home at the Good Samaritan or Idaho State Veterans Home. Spend some and spread some cheer with people who could you a little conversation and care.
As always, charities like Ronald McDonald House and the Salvation Army can make use of any contribution you can manage.
Not only can charities and foundations direct monetary donations to good causes, but they can also take advantage of other donations.
Donate your used coats to Keep Kids Warm, presented by Intermountain Gas Company, so that a child can feel protected against the cold this season. The ECHL's Idaho Steelheads also partake in this initiative. If you donate your coats to the Idaho Steelheads offices, you can win up to four free tickets to a Steelheads game too.
If your kids have any toys that they no longer use, ask them to donate some to the Toys for Tots initiative, working in connection with the armed forces to provide hope for children in Boise.
Volunteer at the Idaho Food Bank
The Idaho Food Bank relies on volunteers to power its mission of providing meals for Boise families who need warm food during this cold season. Help stamp out hunger by volunteering at the food bank, packaging and delivering goods to those in need.
Participate in Christmas Events
The Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees is more than just a tree lighting celebration. This annual event is a fundraiser for cancer research and healthcare provisions within the community. Attend the event and give what you can or become a sponsor to help keep the event running and supporting the city year after year.
The annual tree lighting at The Grove Plaza in downtown Boise is a kickoff event for the Giving Tree program, organized by the Women's and Children's Alliance. Amidst carol singing, candle lighting, and family mingling on November 24, gift tags are hung around the tree to list the Alliance's facility and childcare needs. You can take a tag from the tree, collect the items needed, and drop them off at any Zion's Bank location.
Donate what you can this time of year in Boise, but don't forget to take care of yourself. Visit Hotel 43 and get the gift of rest and relaxation this holiday season. Book your holiday stay now!
