As Christmas draws near, holiday activities abound in Idaho's capital, with wide-ranging fun for you and your family to enjoy. Whether you're into music, sports or anything to get you in the spirit of the season, Boise has various holiday activities you can revel in to round out 2018.
The Gift of Sports
In Boise, college sports mean everything and this holiday season, you get the gift of watching a variety of college sports, with exciting games and tournaments.
The 2018 Vandal Holiday Hoops Showcase will see NCAA teams try and do some serious damage on Thanksgiving weekend (November 23-24). Hosted by the University of Idaho at CenturyLink Arena, the showcase also features UC Santa Barbara, Portland State, and Northwest Nazarene University; all are vying for early season bragging rights. While you're at CenturyLink Arena, take in an Idaho Steelheads game, too, as the Dallas Stars affiliate looks to shine brightly in the ECHL.
If college football is more your thing, you'll like watching the annual Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on the blue turf at Albertsons Stadium. See the Mountain West Conference and Mid-American Conference battle for some precious hardware to close out the college season at the home of the Boise State Broncos.
Christmas and New Year’s Fun
Get into the Christmas spirit early with the Saint Alphonsus Festival of Trees at the Boise Centre (November 21-25), featuring hundreds of lavish looking Christmas trees, wreaths, and inspirational décor. Proceeds from the event go towards cancer research and other healthcare organizations.
You can check out the Christmas Tree at the Idaho State Capitol or witness the Downtown Boise Holiday Tree Lighting on November 23 in The Grove Plaza. Idaho Botanical Garden also glows during Christmas time at the Winter Garden aGlow with over 380,000 sparkling lights artfully displayed throughout the season.
After you've taken in all the lights, treat your ears to some holiday concerts. Christmas-themed performance art dominates the season as Boise Philharmonic rings in seasonal symphonies with its rendition of Handel's Messiah (December 1) and the Holiday Pops concert (December 8). At Ballet Idaho, you can see a timeless classic, The Nutcracker, performed like never before, featuring live music from the Boise Philharmonic.
Let's not forget about that year-end bash. Do you want to celebrate New Year's in a unique way? The Idaho Potato Drop at Idaho State Capitol culminates in the lighting of a “GlowTato” and a firework display to ring in 2019 in quite an original way.
